A part of the Bikuben Foundation’s mission is to strengthen the foundation for visual arts in Denmark and to promote its current and future activities. Art Hub Copenhagen seeks to accomplish this by creating an innovative framework that allows contemporary art to unfold.

Art Hub Copenhagen was established as an independent association in 2018 with the aim of supporting and promoting young visual artists, generating more informed dialogue about what artists do and giving artists a clearer public voice.

Art Hub Copenhagen focuses on artistic research, production, development and outreach, and it sees its role as offering younger artists the facilities and counselling they need to develop as artists, network, conduct research and create new works. In addition, Art Hub Copenhagen works to bring professionals with a range of expertise and from a variety of locations together.

Art Hub Copenhagen is currently housed in Copenhagen at 27 Halmtorvet, but it will move to 29 Thoravej, in the city’s Nordvest district, where the Bikuben Foundation is carrying a major renovation of a building that will serve as a community for groups active in our focus areas.

The Bikuben Foundation conducted a major study in the autumn of 2016 in order to uncover the challenges facing the visual arts in Denmark and their potential. The study identified initiatives to promote art production, networking, knowledge-sharing, outreach and organisation. These themes were unfolded in the 2017 report “Kunstens Rammer — nyskabelse af muligheder for kunstnerisk udvikling i Danmark” (A Framework for the Arts: Creating New Opportunities for Artistic Development in Denmark). Among the report’s findings were that there is a need for a meeting place that can serve as a crucible for collaboration among disciplines and that international relations need strengthening. Read the report (in Danish only) here

In order to concretise various scenarios for the content, structure and organisation of a meeting place, we initiated, as a follow-up to the report, a series of workshops and dialogues with artists, art institutions, foundations and other stakeholders that are either directly or indirectly involved with the arts in Denmark. Their feedback became the scenario for Art Hub Copenhagen’s vision of creating a leading international meeting point in Copenhagen, and it is this scenario that is today a reality.
