We get at the root of the problems – but never alone.
Together with others, we undertake common missions, act, and train our ability to imagine societal change.
We are about 40 people here at the Bikuben Foundation, and we all contribute to the creation of positive change. Some have special knowledge in the areas of art, social science, and nature. And many have professional skills in building alliances, innovation, future thinking, management, facilitation, project management, finances, compliance, public affairs, and communication.
Our history and roots
Our historical roots go back to the savings bank movement. It all started in 1857 when the independent institution Sparekassen Bikuben was established as a reaction to a need for more welfare for a growing working class in Copenhagen. Today, we still do our work from the basic ideas that created the savings bank: It is all about commitment and innovation.
As the years went by, consolidations, mergers, and buyouts of other banking institutes took place, which changed Sparekassen Bikuben’s circumstances and ownership. Smaller non-profit foundations sprouted up and were later consolidated with other similar foundations. In 2010, BG Fonden merged with Bikuben Fonden af 1989 and became what we are today: the Bikuben Foundation. Our capital derives from an ownership share in Sparekassen Bikuben and subsequently BG Bank.
